At the end of World War II, in an abandoned villa near Florence, a young nurse takes care of a mysterious man who has been burned to the ground and miraculously survived. In addition to them, there are two other people in the villa: a Canadian thief and a Sikh sapper. This book is the story of these four very different people, but equally scarred by war. Michael Ondaatchi (1943) is a Canadian novelist and poet of Sri Lankan origin. The English Patient is the writer's most famous book. It was for this novel that Ondaatchi was awarded the Booker Prize. The English Patient became even more famous after the book was made into a film of the same name.
