Vake Park Fountain Restoration Project Begins in Tbilisi

07/18/2025

In July 2025, the city of Tbilisi officially launched a long-term rehabilitation project for the fountains in Vake Park. This initiative is part of a broader urban development program focused on restoring historical infrastructure. The fountains, which have been out of order for more than 15 years, are finally set for a full revival.

Fountains of Vake Park: A Cultural Landmark of Tbilisi

Vake Park is one of the most iconic and visited public spaces in the Georgian capital. Established in the mid-20th century, the park remains an integral part of the city’s identity. The fountains at Vake Park have historically served as both decorative structures and symbols of modernization during the Soviet era.

Due to outdated infrastructure, damaged finishes, and broken systems, the fountains have remained non-functional for years. The new restoration plan aims to bring them back to life using modern technology, sustainable practices, and improved safety standards.

What the Restoration Includes

  • Complete dismantling of outdated systems and piping;
  • Installation of new pumps, filtration systems, and automation controls;
  • Renovation with durable materials like granite and decorative tiles;
  • Energy-efficient LED lighting and water flow regulation;
  • Landscape redesign and new green areas around the fountains.

Timeline and Funding

The Vake Park fountain restoration is expected to take up to 18 months. The project is fully funded by the Tbilisi municipal budget and overseen by the Department of Urban Infrastructure and Maintenance.

Work will be carried out in phases to minimize disruption for park visitors. Some areas have already been fenced off for safety, while most of the green space remains accessible to the public.

Why This Project Matters

Restoring the Vake Park fountains carries both cultural and practical importance:

  • They are part of the city's visual and historic identity;
  • They serve as a central leisure destination for locals and tourists alike;
  • They represent a tangible link to Tbilisi’s urban heritage.

Bringing these structures back to life is expected to boost the appeal of the Vake district, enhance the city’s public image, and promote tourism.

Future Plans

Upon completion of the Vake Park project, the Tbilisi government plans to restore additional fountains across the city, including those in Mziuri Park and along Rustaveli Avenue. This is part of a broader commitment to preserving and revitalizing the capital’s architectural legacy.

The launch of the Vake Park fountain restoration marks a significant milestone in Tbilisi’s urban renewal efforts. It reflects a strategic investment in the city's cultural heritage, green spaces, and public infrastructure, benefitting both residents and future generations.
